Aligarh Movement

  • Wahabi Movement which started in Arabia towards the end of the 18th Century for the revitalization of Islam had its impacts in India.

  • Aligarh Movement was started by Sir Syed Ahmed Khan.

  • He started Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental college at Aligarh in Uttarpradesh in 1875, later it converts in Aligarh Muslim University in 1920.

  • Ahmed Khan started a paper “Loyal Mohammadans of India”.

  • Ahmed Khan laid down the foundation of the Annual Muslim Educational conference in 1886.

  • Aligarh movement brought about the social and political regeneration of Muslims.

  • Syed Ahmed Khan along with Raja Shiva Prasad of Benarus formed United India Patrionic Association in 1888.

  • Ahmed Khan also found Scientific Society in 1864.

  • He also published Tahzib-Ul-Akhlaq, a newspaper in 1870.

  • The Indian who won 'Order of The Star of India' from British Government.

  • Ahmed Khan given Sir status in 1888.
