Lala Lajpat Rai

  • Punjab National Bank was founded by Lala Lajpat Rai in May 19, 1894(95)

  • PNB was the first bank that established VRS

  • He started Vandhematharam (Urdu) newspaper

  • He also published The People weekly

  • In 1904 he was banished to Myanmar by the British government

  • In 1917 he started Indian Home Rule League of America at New York

  • In 1920 he became the starting president of AITUC (Oldest trade union in India) started by N M Joshy

  • In 1920 he was the president of Congress special meeting held at Kolkatta.In this meeting congress approved Non-co operation movement

  • In 1927 he started Congress Independence Party with Madan Mohan Malavya

  • When the Commission visited Lahore on 30 October 1928, Lajpat Rai led silent march in protest against it. The police lathi (baton) charge the protesters and personally assaulted Rai.

  • Despite being injured, Rai subsequently addressed the crowd and said that "I declare that the blows struck at me today will be the last nails in the coffin of British rule in India"
