Census of India - 2011

  • Census 2011 is the 15th Census of India since 1872 and 7th in Independent India.

  • According to 2011 Census, the total population of India was 121 Crore.
  • Population of India constitutes 17.5% of world's population.
  • Uttar Pradesh is the most populated state in India, whereas Sikkim is the least populated.
  • Meghalaya has the highest fertility rate in India.
  • The rate of population growth is 17.64.
  • According to Census 2011, the literacy rate in India is 74.04%. The male literacy rate is 82.14% and the female literacy rate is 65.46%.
  • Kerala (93.9%) is the most literate state in India and Bihar (63.82%) is the least literate state.
  • Among the UTs, Lakshadweep (92.2%) is most literate whereas, Dadar and Nagar Haveli is the least literate.
  • Population density is defined as the number of persons per square kilometer. The population density of India as per Census 2011 is 382.
  • Bihar (1102) is the most densely populated state whereas, Arunachal Pradesh (17) has least density of population. 
  • Sex ratio can be defined as the number of females per 1000 males. At present, the Sex ratio of India is 940/1000.
  • Sex ratio is highest in Kerala (1084/1000) and lowest in Haryana.
  • Among the UTs, Pondicherry has the highest sex ratio whereas, Lakshadweep has the lowest.
  • There are 640 districts in India according to Census 2011.
  • Mumbai is the most populated city followed by Delhi.
