Indian Defence System

Indian Army

  • The highest rank in Indian Army: Field Marshal. First Field Marshal: Field Marshal S. H. F. J. Manekshaw.
  • In total there are 7 Army Commands in India. They are: Western Command(HQ: Chandigarh), Eastern Command(HQ: Kolkata), Northern Command(HQ: Udhampur), Southern Command(HQ: Pune), Central Command(HQ: Lucknow), Army Training Command(HQ: Shimla) and South Western Command(HQ: Jaipur).
  • Father of Indian Army/ The first Commander in Chief of India: Stringer Lawrence.
  • Punita Arora  is the first women Lieutenant General of Indian Army.
  • Army Wide Area Network (AWAN) started functioning from 2006 February 24.

Indian Navy

  • Headed by: Chief of Naval Staff.
  • There are 3 Navy Commands in India. They are: Western Command(HQ: Mumbai), Eastern Command(HQ: Vishakhapatnam) and Southern Command(HQ: Kochi).  
  • Father of Indian Navy: Chhatrapati Shivaji Bhosle.
  • First Commander in Chief of Indian Navy: Admiral Edward Perry.
  • INS Zamorin, Ezhimala is Asia's largest Naval Academy. Motto: "Vidyayaa Amrutam Ashnute".
  • India's largest naval base : INS Kadamba, Karnataka.

Indian Air Force

  • Headquartered in New Delhi.
  • Motto: "Nabhah Sparsham Deeptham (Touch the Sky with Glory)"
  • Headed by: Chief of the Air Staff.
  • Officially established on 8 October 1932.
  • There are 7 Airforce Commands in India. They are: Western Command(HQ: New Delhi), Eastern Command(HQ: Shillong), Southern Command(HQ: Trivandrum), Central Command(HQ: Allahabad), Training Command(HQ: Bengaluru), South Western Command(HQ: Jodhpur) and Maintanance Command(HQ: Nagpur).
  • Highest rank attainable in Indian Air Force: Marshal of the Indian Air Force. The only officer who acheived this rank is Arjan Singh.
  • First to confer the honerary rank of Group Captain by the IAF J. R. D. Tata in 1948.
