Vitamins

A vitamin is an organic compound and a vital nutrient that an organism requires in limited amounts.They are of two types:-

  • Water solvable – B, C

  • Fat solvable – A, D, E, K

Vitamin A

  • Also Known as Retinol

  • Defficiency causes – Nisanthatha, Malakkannu, and Keratomalacia

  • Defficiency of A2 cause Xerophthalmia.

  • Mostly found in leafs,milk,carrot etc

  • Vitamin A is the only vitamin that stores in Liver.

Vitamin D

  • Also known as Calcipherol.

  • Get from milk and egg.

  • Get from Sun rays.

  • Other name: Sunshine Vitamin

  • Its deficiency causes Rickets(Kana) in childrens.

  • In adults its deficiency causes Osteomalasia.

  • It is essential for growth of bones and teeth.

Vitamin E

  • Also known as Tocopherol.

  • Its deficiency causes infertility.

  • It helps in reproduction.

  • Known as Hormone vitamin, Beauty vitamin.

Vitamin K

  • Known as Philloquinone.

  • Helps for blood clotting.

  • Its deficiency causes Haemophelia (X’mas disease or Royal disease).

Vitamin C

  • Known as Ascorbic acid.

  • Available in ctrius fruits.

  • First artificially developed vitamin.

  • Known as fresh vitamin, Anti cancer vitamin.

  • It is not available in milk or proteins.

  • Its deficiency causes Scurvi (Navikarude Plague).

  • Scurvi affects skin.

  • Vitamin C lost while heating.

Vitamin B

  • You can get B vitamins from proteins such as fish, poultry, meat, eggs, and dairy products.

  • The B vitamins are

  • B1 (thiamine)

  • B2 (riboflavin)

  • B3 (niacin)

  • B5 (pantothenic acid)

  • B6 (pyridoxine)

  • B7 (biotin)

  • B12 (cobalamin)

  • B9 (folic acid)
