Rivers in India

Ganges

• The Ganges flows through India and Bangladesh.
• The river Ganges rises in the western Himalayas in the Indian state of Uttarakhand.
• The Ganges begins at the confluence of the Bhagirathi and Alaknanda rivers at Devprayag.
• The Bhagirathi rises at the foot of Gangotri Glacier.
• The Alakanandha rises from Badhrinath.
• Ganges empties into the Bay of Bengal.

Yamuna

• The Yamuna sometimes called Jamuna is the largest tributary river of the Ganges.
• The Ganges joins the Yamuna at the Triveni Sangam at Prayag in Allahabad.
• Yamuna Originates from the Yamunotri Glacier at Lower Himalayas in Uttarakhand.
• It travels a total length of 1,376 kilometers.
• In Hindu mythology, Yamuna is the daughter of Sun God, Surya, and sister of Yama, the God of Death, hence also known as Yami.
• In Hindu mythology Yamuna is known as Kalindhi.
• Mathura, the birth place of Lord Krishna lies on the banks of river Yamuna.
• Agra and Capital city Delhi also lies on the banks of river Yamuna.
• Important tributaries: Tons River, Hindon River, Ken River, Chambal River, Sasur Khaderi River.

Indus River

• The Indus River is one of the longest rivers in Asia.
•  It flows through Pakistan, India and western Tibet.
• Originating in the Tibetan Plateau in the vicinity of Lake Mansarovar.
• After entering into Pakisthan the Indus empties into the Arabian sea near the port city of Karachi.
• Indus is Pakistan's longest river.
• Major tributaries -  Jhelum,  Chenab,  Ravi,  Beas, Sutlej.
• Bhakra Dam is a concrete gravity dam across the Sutlej River.
• It flows through 5 states in India- Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Hariyana and Rajasthan.

Brahmaputra River

• Originates from Mount Kailash near Manasarovar in Tibet.
• It flows through  Bangladesh, India and Tibet.
• It flows through 2 states in India- Assam and Arunachalpradesh.
• Majuli is the Riverine island formed by River Brahmaputra in Assam in India.
• In Tibet Brahmaputhra is known as Tsangpo River.
• When it reaches Arunachal Pradesh (India) where it is known as Dihang or Siang.
• It flows southwest through the Assam Valley as Brahmaputra and south through Bangladesh as the Jamuna.
• Major tributaries- Dibang River, Lohit River, Dhansiri River,  Kalang,Kameng River, Manas River,Raidak River, Jaldhaka River,Teesta River, Subansiri.
• Brahmaputhra is known as ‘Sorrow of Assam’.
• Running through Bangladesh Brahmaputhra empties into the Bay of Bangal.

Mahanadi

• The Mahanadi  is a major river in East Central India.
• Originates from Raipur in Chhattisgarh.
• The river flows through the states of Chhattisgarh and Odisha.
• Near the city of Sambalpur, it is dammed by the largest earthen dam in the world, the Hirakud Dam.
• Mahanadi is known as ‘Sorrow of Odisha’.
• Mahanadi  enters the Bay of Bengal at Dhamra.
• Major tributaries - Seonath, Mand, Ib, Hasdeo, Ong, Jonk, Telen.

Godavari River

• The Godavari is the second longest river in India after the river Ganges.
• It is the longest river in South India.
• It starts from Nasik in Maharashtra and flows for 1,465 kilometres (910 mi) into the Bay of Bengal via the states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.
• Major tributaries of the river include the Purna (South), Pravara, Indravati, Manjira River, Bindusara River, Sabari River, Wainganga, and Wardha River.
• Godhavari is known as Vridha Ganga and Dakshina Ganga.

Krishna River

• The Krishna River is the third longest river in central−southern India, after the Ganges and the Godavari.
• The river is almost 1,300 kilometres (810 mi) long.
• The river is also called Krishnaveni.
• The river originates at Mahabaleswar in Maharashtra.
• The river flows through Maharashtra, Karnataka and Andrapradesh.
• It pours into the Bay of Bengal at Hamasaladeevi (near Koduru) in Andhra Pradesh.
• Vijayawada is the largest city on the River Krishna.
• Sangli is the biggest city on the river Krishna in Maharashtra.
• Nagarjuna Sagar Dam is constructed over river Krishna.
• The well known Mallikarjuna Temple is located on the banks of river Krishna.
• Major tributaries of the river include Bhima, Dindi, Peddavagu, Halia,Musi, Paleru, Munneru, Venna, Koyna, Panchganga,Dudhaganga, Ghataprabha,Malaprabha, Tungabhadra.

Kaveri

• The Kaveri, also written Cauvery in English, is a large Indian river.
• The origin of the river is traditionally placed at Talakaveri (Brahmagiri), Kodagu in the Western Ghats in Karnataka.
• Flows generally south and east through Karnataka and Tamil Nadu and emptying into the Bay of Bengal.
• After the river leaves the Kodagu hills and flows onto the Deccan plateau, it forms two islands, Srirangapatna and Shivanasamudra.
• Major tributaries of the river include Hemavati, Shimsha, Arkavathy, Kabini, Bhavani, Noyyal,Amaravati.
• Famous place Tanjavur lies on the banks of river Kaveri.
• Krishnaraj Sagar  is a dam bilut across the Kaveri river.
• Grand Dam : India’s first dam, built across kaveri

Narmada River

• The Narmada also called the Rewa.
• The source of the Narmada is  located at Amarkantak in Chhattisgarh.
• Is the fifth longest river in the Indian subcontinent.
• It is also known as "Life Line of Madhya Pradesh".
• It flows westwards draining through the Gulf of Khambhat into the Arabian Sea.
• It is one of the rivers in India that flows in a rift valley.
• The other rivers which flow through rift valley include Damodar River in Chota Nagpur Plateau and Tapti.
• The Mahi River also flow through rift valleys.
• Major tributaries of the river include Burhner River, Banjar River,Sher River, Shakkar River,Dudhi River, Tawa River,Ganjal River,Chhota Tawa River,Kundi River, Goi River,Karjan River, Hiran River, Tendoni River,Barna River, Kolar River,Man River, Uri River,Hatni River, Orsang River.
